ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Murići is the best-known point on the quieter southern Montenegrin shore of Lake Skadar, a small lake beach at Donji Murići set below steep, wooded slopes and looking out across the open water toward the offshore monastery islands. Where the northern shore around Virpazar is the busy gateway, the southern shore is the slow, scenic counterpoint — a narrow, winding road through villages and forest, with occasional access down to the water. The beach itself is modest, and swimming here is optional and depends on current weather, water quality, permitted areas and local conditions; there is no guaranteed lifeguard. The chief value of the southern shore is the landscape and the view across the lake to the island monasteries, which can be reached only by an authorised boat and with permission — no beach facility, boat departure or monastery landing is guaranteed.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The southern shore of Lake Skadar has always been the quieter, more remote side of the lake — steep slopes, scattered villages and limited road access kept it apart from the trading life of the northern shore around Virpazar. The villages here — Donji Murići and its neighbours — were fishing and farming settlements, looking out across the open water toward the island monasteries such as Starčevo and Kom that sit off this shore. The modern road along the southern shore is narrow and winding, and the beach at Donji Murići developed as a small, low-key access point to the lake rather than a resort. The offshore monastery islands remain reachable only by boat, and access to them is controlled by the monastic communities and the national park — landings are not guaranteed and depend on permission.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The lake beach at Donji Murići — a small, low-key access point to the open water on the southern shore.
The view toward the offshore monastery islands — Starčevo, Kom and others seen across the open lake.
The southern-shore landscape — steep, wooded slopes, scattered villages and the slow, scenic character of the remote shore.
The open water and distant mountains — the wider Skadar panorama from the southern side of the lake.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Murići and the southern shore are the slow, scenic counterpoint to the busy Virpazar gateway — the place to read Lake Skadar as a quiet landscape rather than a boat-tour hub. For a visitor it offers a lake beach, a view across to the monastery islands and a drive through one of the least-developed shores of the lake. But it is a remote shore with a narrow road and no guaranteed services: swimming, beach facilities, boat departures and monastery landings all depend on current conditions and permission, and the southern-shore road itself demands careful planning.
