ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Virpazar is the principal visitor base for the Montenegrin side of Lake Skadar — a compact village at the northern end of the lake where the rivers Orahovštica, Crnojevića and the channel to the lake meet, and the place from which almost every boat tour departs. It was for centuries a small market town, trading in fish, wine and Crmnica produce, and its low stone houses, bridges and quays still carry that trading-village character. Above the village rises Besac Fortress, an Ottoman-era fortification built on a much older stronghold site, commanding the approach to the lake and the plain. Together the village and the fortress are the natural first stop on any Skadar day — the place to confirm a boat, walk the quays and read the lake from its northern shore before heading out onto the water.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Virpazar grew as a market settlement at the river junction and the lake’s edge, where fish, wine from the surrounding Crmnica hills and agricultural produce were traded and shipped across the lake. A bridge and a small port gave it its name (literally “Vir’s market”), and it remained the main trading gateway to Lake Skadar through the Ottoman and Montenegrin periods. Besac Fortress above the village is an Ottoman-era fortification, built on a site that had been fortified since earlier times to command the narrow approach between the hills and the lake. The fortress changed hands and uses through the centuries and now stands as a ruined hilltop landmark above the village. The interior, any exhibitions, a restaurant or other controlled facilities within the fortress are not guaranteed to be open — check locally before counting on access.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The village quays and bridges — the compact riverside centre of Virpazar, where boat tours depart and the trading-village character survives.
The riverside centre and old stone houses — the low market-town fabric of Virpazar at the meeting of three waters.
Besac Fortress on the hill — the Ottoman-era hilltop fortification above the village, commanding the approach to the lake.
The view over the lake and the Crmnica plain — the panorama from the fortress height across the northern shore of Lake Skadar.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Virpazar is the gateway to Lake Skadar — the place almost every boat tour starts, and the only village on the northern shore with the transport, quays and visitor services to base a visit on. Besac Fortress gives that gateway its landmark and its history, the high point from which the lake approach was once commanded. For a visitor the two together are the natural anchor of any Skadar day, the place to confirm a boat and to read the lake from its shore before going out onto the water.
