ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Ascending Cross Mountain via the Way of the Cross is the demanding extension of a Međugorje pilgrimage. The path up Križevac is steeper, longer and rougher than Apparition Hill, with bronze reliefs of the stations marking a Way of the Cross that pilgrims climb in prayer. The summit is crowned by the 8-metre concrete cross completed in March 1934, and the reward is the finest panorama over Međugorje — the village, the church, Apparition Hill and the Herzegovinian karst plain laid out below. The climb is exposed with loose stone and little shade, so it is best taken in the cooler hours and treated as a separate, optional undertaking rather than a companion to the Apparition Hill climb.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

A steep, long and exposed climb on loose stone with little shade, steeper and rougher than Apparition Hill. Pilgrims climb the Way of the Cross in prayer; sturdy shoes and water are essential, and the climb is best kept to the morning or the late afternoon. The summit is open and exposed, so pause for the view and the cross before descending carefully on the loose stone.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Cross Mountain is the demanding counterpart to Apparition Hill — a steeper, longer climb crowned by a cross that predates the reported apparitions, and the place that gives the finest view over the whole of Međugorje. For a visitor with the time and the legs it completes a pilgrimage day; for one without, it is honestly the harder of the two hills and best treated as optional.
