ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Walking the village between the church and the hills is the way to see the everyday Herzegovinian landscape behind the pilgrimage. Međugorje is a living village of dry-stone walls, vineyards and karst hills in the municipality of Čitluk, and a gentle walk from the parish church through the lanes and out among the vines shows the place that the pilgrimage grew out of. The walk is flat and easy where the hill climbs are steep, and it is the natural pause between the liturgical programme and the climbs — a way to read the village as a village, not only as a shrine. The vineyards of the Čitluk karst are the working ground of the village, and the dry-stone walls that thread them are part of the Herzegovinian karst landscape the hills stand above.
