ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Villa Angiolina is the villa that started it all — built in 1844 by the merchant Iginio Scarpa and the first grand house that drew the Habsburg elite to Opatija. It sits in a botanical park of camellias, palms and exotic trees planted in the resort’s golden age, and the villa now holds the Croatian Museum of Tourism. Around it, the connected parks of Angiolina and St James form the green heart of the town.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Iginio Scarpa built Villa Angiolina in 1844 as a summer residence, and the visits of the Austrian empress Maria Anna and later the Habsburg court turned Opatija into a fashionable spa. The South Railway Company developed the town with grand hotels and parks from the 1880s, and the botanical collections in Angiolina Park were planted to give the resort a subtropical character. The villa has been restored as the Museum of Tourism, telling the story of Croatian hospitality.
