Opatija has almost no sand — its swimming is from the rocky platforms and concrete bathing spots built along the Lungomare in the Habsburg era, with ladders dropping into the clear water of the gulf. It is a distinctive, elegant way to swim, and the platforms are spaced along the promenade so you can walk, swim and walk again.

What you’ll experience

You walk the Lungomare until you find a platform that suits you, leave your things on the rocks, and descend the ladder into the water. The water is deep and clear, with the gulf opening toward the islands. Some platforms have small cafés beside them; others are quiet and simple. The experience is more about the setting than the beach.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

There is no sand and little shallow water — this is platform swimming, better for confident swimmers. Bring sea shoes for the rocks. The platforms are free and busiest in the afternoon in summer.
