Walk the Town Walls and Castle
Walk the walls, the Frankopan castle and the cathedral complex in a short circuit of Krk old town.

Cities & Culture
The “Golden Island” — a walled town and a varied island connected by bridge to the mainland.
Krk is both a walled town and the island it sits on, the largest island in the Adriatic and the only major Kvarner island joined to the mainland by a bridge. The town of Krk preserves Venetian walls, a Romanesque cathedral and a Frankopan castle above the harbour, while the island ranges from busy resorts to quiet coves, vineyards and the dramatic karst of the eastern coast. The clifftop wine village of Vrbnik and the sandy beaches of Baška give the island two very different faces.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Krk was ruled for centuries by the Frankopan princes, whose castle still stands in the town, before passing to Venice. The island’s Glagolitic script — the old Slavonic alphabet — survived here longer than anywhere else in Croatia, and the Baška Tablet, a key monument of the Croatian language, was found in the church at Baška. The Krk bridge, opened in 1980, made the island the only major Kvarner island joined to the mainland by road.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Krk’s nature is karst and sea. The east coast around Vrbnik is the wildest stretch — bare limestone cliffs dropping to clear water, with walking paths along the cliff tops and quiet coves below. The interior holds vineyards, olive groves and the dry stone walls of the island’s old agriculture, and the karst meadows flower with sage and orchids in spring. The sea around the island is clear and rich, with sea urchins on the rocks and small fish in the shallows of the coves.
PLAN YOUR VISIT
Krk is connected to the mainland by a toll bridge, so no ferry is needed — about 30 minutes from Rijeka by car and around 2 hours from Zagreb. Rijeka airport sits on the island itself. Buses run to Krk town from Rijeka and Zagreb.
A car or bike is the best way to see the island; the east coast (Vrbnik, Baška) is a drive from Krk town. Local buses connect the main villages in season.
One day covers Krk town and a wine or beach stop. Two days allow the full island circuit — town, Vrbnik and Baška.
May–June and September for warm weather and quiet; July and August for full beach season, though the resorts are at their busiest.
