ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Patriarchate is Serbia’s spiritual heart: the cluster of three churches (Sts Apostles, St Demetrius, the Mother of God) joined by a common narthex in the 14th century, standing in the gorge’s mouth under the cliff. Inside, the frescoes run from the 13th century; the narthex holds the graves of the Serbian patriarchs — the seat where the church’s heads were enthroned for centuries.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The seat of the Serbian archbishops from St Arsenije’s era (1230s); the churches were built and painted through the 13th–14th centuries, and the narthex (c. 1330) joined them under one roof. The patriarchate was abolished in 1766 (the Ottoman era) and restored in 1920 — the monastery’s continuity is the Serbian church’s deepest symbol. UNESCO inscribed it in 2006 within “Medieval Monuments in Kosovo”.
