ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Walking the Walls of Ston is the definitive Pelješac half-day: a ticketed ridge path that follows the 14th-century wall chain from the forts above Ston down its zigzag line and along the bay to Mali Ston. The ground is rocky, the line steep in places, and the views run the whole time — the salt pans and the plain below, the Mali Ston bay, the channel beyond. Either half of the wall can be walked alone; the full crossing takes two to three hours and finishes perfectly with an oyster lunch at Mali Ston.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You enter at the Ston gate, climb to the Veliki Kaštil fort on the saddle, and follow the wall line over the ribs of the hill — the Koruna fort is the high point of the ridge — before the long descent toward Mali Ston and the bay. The stone underfoot is original in stretches and restored in others; the towers open viewpoints along the way. There is no shade and no water on the wall; in summer, go early or late.
THE EXPERIENCE IN DETAIL
What it’s really like
Walking the Walls of Ston: a two-to-three-hour ridge circuit on the longest medieval fortification line in Europe, from Ston over the Koruna fort to Mali Ston above the salt pans.
HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
The full 5.5-kilometre wall line between the two Ston towns.
The Veliki Kaštil and Koruna forts on the ridge.
The salt pans and bay read from above — the walls’ whole purpose visible.
The oyster lunch at Mali Ston as the walk’s finish.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Ticketed entry at both ends; the full crossing is 2–3 hours of rocky, mostly unshaded walking with real climbs. Wear proper shoes — the wall path is not a stroll — and carry water. The walls close in high wind and in summer heat hours; verify current opening times locally.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The walls are the greatest fortification on the Adriatic after Dubrovnik itself, and walking them is the only way to understand the scale of the Ragusan achievement. For a visitor it is the peninsula’s essential experience.
