ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Perast Museum sits in the Bujović Palace, the grandest of the waterfront Baroque palaces built by Perast’s seafaring families at the height of the town’s 17th- and 18th-century prosperity. The palace was the residence of the Bujović family, captains and naval commanders whose fortunes were made at sea under Venice, and it now houses the town’s museum — the place where Perast’s maritime, civic and family history is gathered under one roof. The building itself, with its waterfront façade, grand staircase and painted interiors, is as much the exhibit as the collection it holds, and its architecture is the fallback experience when the museum is closed.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The Bujović Palace was built in 1694 for the Bujović family, one of Perast’s leading maritime dynasties, at the peak of the town’s wealth under Venetian rule. Like the other great waterfront palaces of Perast, it was a domestic seat built with the profits of trade and naval service, and its Baroque form reflects the town’s direct cultural and architectural ties to Venice. As Perast’s maritime economy declined through the 19th century, many of the palaces fell into disuse or were repurposed; the Bujović Palace was eventually restored to house the town’s museum, bringing together the paintings, documents, maps, ship models and household material that record Perast’s past as a community of sailors, shipowners and civic families.

03

04

The household and civic material — furniture, domestic objects and family records that show the everyday life of Perast’s elite families.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The Bujović Palace is the single building that holds Perast’s story — the place where the town’s maritime wealth, its civic pride and its family histories are gathered together. For a visitor it is the one stop that turns the waterfront from a sequence of beautiful façades into a documented past, and the palace itself is the finest example of the domestic Baroque that gives Perast its character. When the museum is closed, the exterior architecture alone is worth the stop.

The exterior architecture — the façade, doorway and waterfront setting — is the fallback experience when the museum is closed.
Context
The Bujović Palace is one of the great waterfront Baroque palaces of Perast and the home of the town museum.
