ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Saint Nicholas is Perast’s principal church and its living religious site, standing on the waterfront beside the square that carries its name. The church itself is a Baroque building, but the structure that defines the townscape is its separate bell tower — a tall, slender campanile begun in the 17th century and long left unfinished, which rises above the roofs and gives Perast its characteristic twin-tower silhouette when seen from the water. The tower is also the one high viewpoint in the town, commanding the waterfront, the bay and the two islands offshore. Church interior and tower access are treated separately, and both are conditional on the day.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
A church of Saint Nicholas has stood on the Perast waterfront since the medieval period, serving the town’s principal parish. The present Baroque church was built in the early 17th century on earlier foundations, but its great bell tower — begun in 1691 to a design intended to rival the campaniles of the Venetian lagoon — was never completed to its planned height, leaving it the tall but truncated tower seen today. The tower long stood without its upper bells, and the church and its confraternity remained the religious and civic heart of Perast even as the town’s maritime fortunes declined after the fall of Venice. The tower’s unfinished state became part of its identity, and it remains the dominant landmark of the waterfront.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The bell tower — the tall, slender, unfinished campanile that defines Perast’s skyline and its twin-tower silhouette from the water.
The church façade and waterfront setting — the Baroque parish church on the main square, the religious heart of the town.
The view from the tower — when officially open, a panorama over the waterfront, the bay and the two islands offshore.
Saint Nicholas Square — the open space around the church, the principal public room of the town and the start of the waterfront walk.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Saint Nicholas and its bell tower are the vertical axis of Perast — the landmark that organises the waterfront and the one place to look down on the town and its two islands. For a visitor the tower is the high viewpoint that completes the water-level view from the islands, but it is a living church and a controlled structure: interior and tower access are never guaranteed, and the steep, narrow tower stairs make it unsuitable for everyone.
