ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Bogorodica Ljeviška is Prizren’s medieval heart: king Milutin rebuilt the older church around 1307–1309 and the master painters (the same circle as Gračanica) covered its walls around 1310 with frescoes that rank among the highest achievements of Byzantine painting. The church is part of the UNESCO “Medieval Monuments in Kosovo” World Heritage listing.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The original church (the “Ljeviška” dedication is older than the town’s records) was rebuilt by king Milutin c. 1307; the fresco programme (c. 1310, signed circles of the Thessaloniki masters) is among the Balkans’ finest. Through the Ottoman era it served as a mosque (the name “Ljeviška” survives); the 20th century’s restorations returned the frescoes to view. The UNESCO listing (2006, extended) protects the church — and its windows’ shelter keeps the paintings’ light controlled.
