ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Trieste camps better than almost any Italian city: the flagship Mare Pineta Baia Sistiana spreads across the terrace above its namesake bay 10 km northwest of the centre — sea-view pitches, a semi-Olympic pool, and the Rilke trail starting at the gate — while the small Camping Obelisco sits on the karst plateau above Opicina, ten minutes from town and a short walk from the tram line and the karst walking country.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
At Mare Pineta you pick a Paradise pitch for the panorama over the Baia di Sistiana and the whole Gulf, walk 10 minutes down to the pebble beach (or take the camp’s free shuttle train), and finish the day with the Rilke trail walk to Duino Castle — the most famous coastal hike in the region — straight from the campsite gate. At Obelisco, the karst plateau version: pines, dry-stone walls, morning mist over the Gulf far below, and the Opicina tram for the ride down into the city. Both are working bases for the Val Rosandra gorge and the Aquileia day trip.
THE EXPERIENCE IN DETAIL
What it’s really like
HIGHLIGHTS
Moments worth savouring
Sea-view pitches over the Baia di Sistiana at Mare Pineta (open late March to mid-October).
Direct access to the Rilke trail — Duino Castle in about an hour on foot.
Camping Obelisco: the quiet karst-plateau alternative above Opicina, minutes from the tram.
Pool, tennis and diving at Sistiana; the beach reached by a free camp shuttle.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Mare Pineta is a large family village — book sea-view pitches well ahead for July and August; buses 6/36 from the camp gate reach the city in about 20 minutes. Obelisco is smaller and quieter, with a simple shop; best for campervans and travellers who want the karst evenings. The Barcolana regatta week (second Sunday of October) books out the whole coast.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Camping is the cheapest and often the most beautiful way to stay on this coast — and the Sistiana bay site, with the Rilke trail at its gate, is among the best-located campsites in northern Italy.
