ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
The Val Rosandra is a deep limestone gorge in the karst plateau southeast of the city, where the Rosandra stream drops over a 30-metre waterfall into a valley of scree, pines and old Roman quarry faces. Marked paths loop through the valley and up to the village of Botazzo, and a via ferrata climbs the gorge wall for those who want it. It is the closest real mountain hiking to any major Italian city centre.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You reach the valley by bus or car in about 20 minutes, descend into the gorge on the marked trail, and follow the stream past the ruins of a Roman aqueduct dam, the waterfall and the cliffs. The upper trails cross open karst grassland with views over the Gulf and toward Slovenia, which begins a few hundred metres away.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Good to know before you go
Half a day for the main loop (about 7 km, 300 m of climb); take water — the karst holds none. Boots or trail shoes; the gorge trails are rocky. Spring is the best season for the waterfall.
WHY IT MATTERS
