ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE
Aquileia, founded by the Romans in 181 BC, was for centuries one of the largest and richest cities of the empire — the capital of Roman Italy northeast of the Apennines — before Attila burned it in 452. Its UNESCO-listed basilica preserves one of the largest early-Christian mosaic floors in Europe, and the excavated forum, river port and necropolis make it the perfect Roman companion to Trieste’s Habsburg layer.
WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE
What you’ll experience
You travel about an hour by train or car, walk the quiet town from the basilica to the river port, and stand on 4th-century mosaics that cover the entire floor of the early-Christian hall. The archaeological museum reassembles the city’s statuary, inscriptions and river-finds into the story of the Roman Adriatic’s northern gate.

Half a day is enough for the basilica, forum and museum; add a lagoon lunch. Trains run Trieste–Cervignano, with a short bus connection; by car it is 45 minutes.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Aquileia is the Roman key to understanding Trieste — the older, greater city whose fall left Trieste the free port to become what it became.
