ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Trieste is the European city of coffee — the port through which the Habsburg Empire imported it for two centuries, home of Illy, and the place where the Central European coffee house became an institution on Italian soil. The historic houses around Piazza Unità and the old town — Caffè degli Specchi (1839), Caffè Tommaseo (1830), Caffè San Marco (1914) — kept their mirrors, marble and newspapers, and an afternoon spent in one of them is as Trieste as any monument.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

You choose a house — Specchi for the square-front glamour, Tommaseo for the painted ceilings, San Marco for the intellectual, slightly shabby grandeur with books and chess. You sit at a marble table, order a coffee Trieste-style (an nero, a goccia, a capo in bicchiere — the local vocabulary is its own dialect of coffee), and stay as long as you like. The newspapers are still hung on the wooden sticks in some houses.

HIGHLIGHTS

Moments worth savouring

01

Caffè degli Specchi on Piazza Unità — the mirrors, the light, the square outside.

02

Caffè San Marco — the intellectual’s house, once raided by fascists in 1920 for exactly that reason.

03

Trieste coffee vocabulary: un caffè is a nero, a macchiato is a capo, and a small glass one is un goccia.

04

The Illy coffee story — the company was founded in Trieste in 1933.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

Table service at the historic houses; prices are city-centre but not extreme, and nobody will hurry you out. Mornings are quieter; aperitivo hours (18:00–20:00) bring the square to life.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The coffee house is Trieste’s true indigenous institution — more than any monument, it is how the city has always thought of itself: Central European, literary, and unhurried.
