ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Rafting the Una is the experience the park is built around. The river drops fast through the protected stretch, building a sequence of rapids between the calmer green pools — at high water in spring some of them are serious white water, while in summer the levels fall and the same run becomes a warmer, splashier trip that almost anyone can do. Licensed operators based in Bihać and inside the park run half-day descents with a guide in each raft, and the trip puts you onto the river that everything else in the park — the waterfalls, the canyons, the colour of the water — is really about. If you have one day in Una and want one thing to do, this is it.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

You meet your operator in Bihać or at a park base, drive to the put-in upstream, and get kitted out with a helmet, buoyancy aid and paddle before a safety briefing. The raft holds six to eight people plus a guide who steers and calls the strokes. You set off downriver through a mix of calm stretches — where you can look up at the forested banks and the canyon walls — and rapids, where the guide tells you when to paddle and when to hold on. Most trips include a stop to swim in one of the green pools, and some include a break at a riverside spot for food. The take-out is downstream, and you are driven back to the start. The whole outing is a half-day, with most of the time spent on the water.

HIGHLIGHTS

Moments worth savouring

01

The Una’s rapids — a sequence of white-water drops through the park’s protected stretch, from family-friendly summer runs to bigger spring water.

02

The colour of the river — the deep emerald green the Una is famous for, seen from water level rather than from the bank.

03

A guided half-day descent with licensed operators, with a guide steering each raft — no experience needed for the summer sections.

04

A swim stop in one of the calm green pools between rapids.

05

Canyon walls and forested banks visible only from the river, hidden from the road that runs above.

06

The experience that ties the whole park together — the waterfalls, the canyons and the river itself, understood from the current.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Good to know before you go

Rafting on the Una is run by several licensed operators based in and around Bihać and inside the park, typically from spring through autumn. Water levels are highest in spring after snowmelt, when the rapids are biggest and the trip is most demanding; in late summer the river is lower, warmer and calmer, and the same run suits beginners and families. You will get wet regardless — dress in quick-drying clothes and bring a change for after. Operators provide helmets, buoyancy aids and paddles, and a guide in each raft; you do not need to be a strong swimmer, but you should be comfortable in water and reasonably fit. Book ahead in the high season, and confirm what a given trip includes — the section, the distance and the rapid grades — before you go. Prices and schedules vary by operator, so check current details locally.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Una National Park is a park about a river, and rafting is the one experience that puts you properly onto that river. The waterfalls are seen from beside the water; the canyons are seen from above; rafting is the only way to feel the current, the drop and the colour of the Una from inside it. It is also the activity the park is best known for, and the one that most distinguishes a visit here. For a traveller who wants one thing to do beyond the viewpoints, this is it.
