ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Kulen Vakuf is the largest settlement in the upper part of Una National Park, sitting on the Una where the river runs wide, clear and green between wooded hills. It is a quiet place — a few streets, a couple of restaurants and accommodation, and an old stone bridge over the river — but it earns its place in a park visit as the natural base for the upper Una. From here a forest trail climbs to the medieval ruin of Ostrovica Fortress on the hill above the town, giving the best panorama over the river and the park’s upper valley. For visitors exploring the upper park, rafting the calmer stretches, or hiking to Ostrovica, Kulen Vakuf is the practical anchor.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Kulen Vakuf grew as a small border and market town on the Una under Ottoman rule, and its old stone bridge across the river dates from that period — a modest, single-arch structure that still carries the road. The town sat on the military border between the Ottoman and Habsburg empires for centuries, which is why the medieval Ostrovica fortress was built on the heights above it. Like much of the Krajina, Kulen Vakuf was badly affected by the 1992–95 war and has rebuilt quietly since. Today it functions as a small local centre and a base for visitors to the upper park.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The Una at Kulen Vakuf — the river here runs wide, clear and emerald-green between forested banks; the bridge gives the easiest view.

02

The old stone bridge — a modest Ottoman-era single-arch bridge over the Una, still in use and the town’s most distinctive built landmark.

03

The Ostrovica trailhead — the forest path to Ostrovica Fortress begins at the edge of town; the climb is the main walk in the upper park.

04

The upper valley panorama — from the heights above the town (or from Ostrovica) the upper Una valley opens out below.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Kulen Vakuf is the practical key to the upper park. It is the place to eat, sleep and stock up before walking to Ostrovica or rafting the upper Una, and it shows the river in its calmer, wider character — a contrast to the waterfalls downstream. For a visitor moving through the park from Bihać towards the upper reaches, it is the natural turning point and the base for the park’s one real hilltop hike.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
Kulen Vakuf is in the upper park, on the road that follows the Una upstream from Bihać past Martin Brod. It is roughly an hour’s drive from Bihać.
Services
The town has a few restaurants, cafés and small accommodation options — useful as a base for the upper park, where facilities are otherwise scarce.
Walking
The Ostrovica trail starts at the edge of town; allow a half-day for the round trip to the fortress and back.
Context
Pair Kulen Vakuf with the climb to Ostrovica and, if time allows, with the Martin Brod falls downstream for a full upper-park day.
