ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Martin Brod is the small village where the Unac river meets the Una, at the upper end of the national park, and the river here builds a long series of travertine falls and pools — broader, lower and more spread out than the single dramatic drop at Štrbački Buk. The main fall, often called Milančev Buk, tumbles in steps through a wide green channel, with walking paths along the bank and a swimming spot in the warmer months. The village itself is tiny and quiet, with a couple of guesthouses and restaurants, and the whole setting feels more lived-in and less crowded than the park’s western falls. For visitors who want to slow down, swim, or walk beside the river rather than race to a single viewpoint, Martin Brod is the better stop.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Martin Brod has been a crossing and settlement point on the Una for centuries, sitting at the confluence with the Unac — a river that runs through a deep, remote canyon of its own. The travertine falls here are part of the same living limestone system that builds Štrbački Buk downstream: the river deposits mineral barriers as it flows, creating a staircase of small falls and pools that slowly migrates over time. When Una National Park was declared in 2008, the Martin Brod area became one of the park’s core protected zones, and the village shifted from a quiet border community towards a small base for park visitors, with local restaurants and accommodation.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

Milančev Buk and the main falls — the broad, stepped cascade through the village, best viewed from the riverside path; lower and gentler than Štrbački Buk, and easier to take in at leisure.

02

The riverside walking paths — trails run along the bank past the series of falls and pools, giving a longer, quieter walk than the boardwalk circuit at Štrbački Buk.

03

The Unac confluence — the point where the Unac river joins the Una at the edge of the village, at the mouth of a deep, little-visited canyon.

04

The village itself — a small, calm settlement with a couple of restaurants and guesthouses, useful as a base or a lunch stop.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Martin Brod is the counterweight to Štrbački Buk: where the western falls are about one overwhelming drop, Martin Brod is about a whole stretch of the river — falls, pools, paths and a village together. It is the part of the park where you can slow down, swim, eat beside the water and walk without a crowd, and it shows the Una as a lived-in river as well as a spectacular one. For a visitor with a full day, pairing the two gives the clearest picture of what the park is.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
Martin Brod sits in the upper part of the park, on the road that follows the Una upstream from Bihać. An entrance fee applies to the park zone; check at the local kiosk.
Walking
Riverside paths are mostly flat and easy, though they can be wet and slippery near the falls — wear grippy shoes.
Swimming
Swimming is possible in designated pools in summer; follow local signage and never swim above the falls.
Context
Allow a relaxed half-day. Martin Brod pairs naturally with Štrbački Buk for a full waterfall day, and the village restaurants make it a good lunch stop.
