ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Ostrovica is a ruined medieval fortress on the wooded hill above Kulen Vakuf, and the one proper hilltop walk inside Una National Park. A forest path climbs from the edge of town to the remains of the old walls and towers, which stand on a rocky outcrop looking straight down the upper Una valley. Little is left of the castle itself — fragments of wall and the footprint of the towers — but the setting is the point: from the top the river threads away below, the forested hills of the park close the horizon, and Kulen Vakuf sits small at the foot of the hill. It is a quiet, earned viewpoint, and the best place in the park to see the upper Una from above.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Ostrovica was built in the medieval period to command the upper Una valley and the approach to the river crossing at Kulen Vakuf, controlling a strategic point on the border between the medieval Bosnian state and its neighbours. Like many Krajina fortresses it stood on the frontier between the Ottoman and Habsburg empires in later centuries, and it was eventually abandoned as its military purpose disappeared. Today only fragments of the walls and towers survive, but the site is protected as part of Una National Park, and the trail to it is maintained by the park authority.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The ruined walls and towers — fragments of the medieval fortress on the rocky summit; little survives, but the plan of the castle is still readable on the ground.

02

The panorama over the upper Una — the clearest view in the park of the river threading through the valley below, with Kulen Vakuf at the foot of the hill.

03

The forest trail — a shaded climb through the woods above town, quiet and mostly unused, the park’s one real hill walk.

04

The summit outcrop — the bare rock at the top gives a natural viewpoint and a sense of why the fortress was built here.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Ostrovica is the only hilltop hike in a park that is otherwise all about water, and it gives the one view that puts the upper Una into context — the river seen from above rather than from beside. As a site it is a fragment, but as a walk and a viewpoint it is the most rewarding short hike in the park, and the natural reason to stop in Kulen Vakuf. For a visitor who has seen the waterfalls and been on the river, it is the third side of the park.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
The trailhead is at the edge of Kulen Vakuf; the climb to the summit takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes each way on a forest path.
Walking
A moderate hill-path climb — uneven and rocky in places, and slippery after rain. Wear grippy shoes and avoid it in winter ice.
Facilities
There are no facilities on the hill; carry water, especially in summer, and take your litter down.
Context
Allow a half-day from Kulen Vakuf. The fortress is the natural reason to stop in the upper park and pairs well with the Martin Brod falls on a full upper-park day.
