ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Štrbački Buk is the waterfall people come to Una National Park to see. The Una river piles into a broad travertine barrier close to the Croatian border and drops in two main tiers — together around 20 to 25 metres — into a deep emerald pool, fanning out across a wide wall of white water and spray. A network of wooden boardwalks and viewing platforms climbs the gorge beside it, so you can stand almost level with the top of the falls, look down into the pool, and watch the river fold over itself from several angles. At high water in spring it is deafening and drenching; in late summer it is lower, greener and easier to photograph. It is the single most dramatic piece of the river inside the park, and the place that most visitors remember.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Štrbački Buk is a living waterfall: like the other falls along the Una, it is built of travertine — limestone deposited by the water itself, layer on layer, as moss and algae trap minerals out of the current. The barrier is therefore still growing and still shifting its shape, which is why the falls look different at every water level and why the pool below keeps reworking its edges. The waterfall sits on the international border between Bosnia & Herzegovina and Croatia, and the wider stretch of the Una around it was placed under protection when Una National Park was declared in 2008. The boardwalks and viewing platforms were built by the park authority to let visitors reach the falls without trampling the fragile travertine.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The main drop — the two-tiered cascade fanning across the full width of the travertine barrier; spend a few minutes watching the water change character from the upper plunge to the lower fan.
The boardwalks and viewing platforms — a network of wooden walkways climbs the gorge beside the falls, giving level, top and bottom viewpoints without leaving the path.
The emerald pool below — the deep green pool at the foot of the falls, the colour the Una is famous for and a reminder of how clear the water is.
The border setting — the falls straddle the Bosnia–Croatia border; look for the way the river defines the line between the two countries.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Štrbački Buk is the sight that defines Una National Park — the image on every brochure and the reason most visitors make the drive from Bihać. As a natural feature it is a textbook example of a living travertine waterfall, still building itself out of the river. For a visitor it is the one place in the park where the scale and power of the Una are immediately obvious, and the boardwalks make that experience available to almost anyone who can walk a short distance.
