Ski or learn to ski at Babanovac in winter (December into early spring)
A family-friendly winter ski day at Babanovac on the northern side of Vlašić — lifts, groomed slopes and mountain accommodation close to the Lašva valley.
Mountains & Skiing
A broad central-Bosnian mountain of pastures and peaks — a family ski resort at Babanovac in winter and a green highland of katuns and Vlašić cheese in summer.
Vlašić is the mountain that rises above the town of Travnik in central Bosnia, a wide massif whose rounded peaks reach nearly two thousand metres and whose high pastures have long been used for summer grazing. It is one of the principal mountain destinations of Bosnia & Herzegovina: in winter the Babanovac ski area on its northern side offers family-friendly skiing close to the Lašva valley, while in summer the same heights turn into a green highland of open meadows, stone katuns and long views. Vlašić gives its name to the famous Vlašić cheese — a highland white cheese traditionally made in the katuns from the milk of the summer pastures — and the mountain’s rural character is as much a part of a visit as its slopes. For a visitor it is the accessible mountain of central Bosnia, equally suited to a winter ski day and a summer walk among the pastures.

HISTORY & CULTURE
Vlašić has been a highland grazing mountain for centuries, and its pastures gave rise to the Vlašić cheese that carries its name — a white cheese traditionally made in the summer katuns from the milk of the grazing herds and sold across the region. Its life as a sport mountain developed in the Yugoslav period, when the slopes at Babanovac were equipped for skiing, and the area has grown since into one of the principal family ski resorts of Bosnia & Herzegovina. The high pastures above the resort keep the older transhumant character of the mountain alive, and the higher summit ground of Paljenik (Opaljenik), recorded in older references as Gavrića Vrh, remains the high-point objective for walkers on the massif.

VIEW ROUTEPLAN YOUR VISIT
Vlašić is reached by road from Travnik and the Lašva valley, with Babanovac the principal base on the northern side. A car is the practical way to reach the base, the higher pastures and the trailheads; public transport to the upper mountain is limited, so check current options before you travel. The higher roads and routes may be unsuitable or unavailable in winter.
For skiing, layers, gloves and appropriate ski equipment — confirm what is supplied by the resort or a rental outlet. For pasture walks, sturdy footwear, layers, water and sun protection. For the higher peaks, mountain footwear, layers, water, navigation, appropriate equipment and current safe-route information; a local guide is advised for demanding objectives.
The Babanovac base area is the most accessible face of the mountain, with facilities concentrated around the base; the high pastures and the higher peaks involve uneven outdoor terrain and are not readily accessible. The mountain does not offer full wheelchair accessibility across its sites — assess each site against your needs and confirm access details with local information in advance.
