ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Paljenik, also known as Opaljenik and recorded in older references as Gavrića Vrh, is the higher ground of the Vlašić massif, reached on foot for long views across central Bosnia toward the mountains of the Lašva and Vrbas valleys. The summit area stands at roughly 1,933 metres, and the ascent is a higher-peak objective that requires suitable weather, navigation and appropriate equipment; it is not a casual walk, and the full mountain is not accessible or safe in all seasons. The coordinate given here marks the peak area. Use current safe-route information and a qualified local guide for unfamiliar or demanding objectives, and check the weather and conditions before any attempt.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Paljenik (Opaljenik) is the higher summit ground of the Vlašić massif, long known to the highland herders of the mountain and recorded in older references as Gavrića Vrh. The name Opaljenik (and its variant Paljenik) is the form used for the peak in current mapping, while Gavrića Vrh remains in use as an older name for the same high ground. The summit has been an objective for walkers on the mountain for decades, reached on foot from the highland above the Babanovac base.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The summit area — the high ground at roughly 1,933 metres, the objective of the ascent.
The long views — the panoramas across central Bosnia toward the Lašva and Vrbas valleys.
The highland approach — the pastures and open ground crossed on the way to the peak.
The Dinaric setting — the massif seen from its highest ground, in the context of the surrounding central-Bosnian ranges.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Paljenik is the high-point objective of a Vlašić visit and the place from which the massif and central Bosnia are seen at their widest. For a visitor with the experience and the equipment, it is the demanding objective that stands above the pasture walks and the ski area.
