ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Vlašić high pastures are the open meadows and stone katuns of the plateau above the Babanovac base, the green highland that gives the mountain its summer character. In the warmer months herds graze the pastures and the seasonal katuns are lived in, the transhumant way of life that produced the famous Vlašić cheese still visible here. The pastures are a broad landscape area rather than a single point, so no single location is given here; they are reached on foot from the Babanovac area and across the highland. Vlašić cheese is a regional pastoral tradition; this guide does not promise farm visits, tastings or purchases from unnamed producers, and any such arrangement should be confirmed directly with the producer.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Vlašić has been a highland grazing mountain for centuries, and its pastures gave rise to the Vlašić cheese that carries its name — a white cheese traditionally made in the summer katuns from the milk of the grazing herds and sold across the region. The transhumant pattern of moving herds to the high pastures in summer shaped the mountain long before the ski resort was built, and it remains the older layer of Vlašić’s character, visible in the katuns and the open meadows above Babanovac.
WHAT TO SEE
What to see here
The open meadows — the green highland pastures that define the Vlašić plateau in summer.
The stone katuns — the seasonal pastoral shelters where the highland way of life is still lived in the warmer months.
The grazing herds — the animals on the summer pastures, the source of the milk for Vlašić cheese.
The long views — the open panoramas across central Bosnia toward the mountains of the Lašva and Vrbas valleys.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The high pastures are the older, rural layer of Vlašić and the reason the mountain is more than a ski resort. For a visitor they are the summer face of the mountain and the setting of the pastoral tradition behind Vlašić cheese.
