ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Dolac is Zagreb’s main food market, a square of red-umbrella stalls laid out on a terrace just above the main square, with the cathedral rising behind it. It is the city’s living pantry — farmers from the Zagreb hinterland selling produce, honey, cheese and flowers — and the most photogenic everyday sight in the capital. The market has been here since the 1930s and is at its best in the early morning.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Dolac was laid out as the city’s main market in 1930, on a terrace cut into the slope between the lower town and the Upper Town, replacing the old market on the main square. The red umbrellas of the stalls have become a symbol of Zagreb, and the market is still supplied by small producers from the surrounding villages — the same role it was built for, now nearly a century on.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
Dolac is the everyday Zagreb — the market that shows the capital as a living city rather than a museum, and the best place to buy picnic food for day trips. For a visitor it is the morning stop before the Upper Town.
