ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
A few hundred metres west of the basilica, the Natissa river holds Aquileia’s reason for existing: the excavated quays of its fluvial port, built of great Istrian limestone blocks set on two levels against the tide. Sea-going ships came up from the Adriatic and transferred their cargo to river boats for the journey north — this was the customs gate of the whole northeastern empire, and the stone mooring steps still carry the grooves of two thousand years of rope.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The port was the engine of Aquileia’s wealth from the 2nd century BC: grain from Sicily and Africa, wine and oil in amphorae, metal from Noricum, amber from the Baltic, and glass, silk and spice from the East all crossed these quays. The warehouses along the river were among the largest in the Roman world. After Attila’s destruction the river silted, the sea retreated, and the port’s memory survived only in the name of the meadow that covers part of it.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The port explains Aquileia in one glance — a city built to be the hinge between the sea and central Europe, and the reason a refugee elite from its fall ended up founding Venice in the lagoon.
