ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Aranđelovac is Šumadija’s gentle spa: the mineral waters of Bukovička Banja at the foot of Mount Bukulja, the Risovača cave (a Palaeolithic site) at the town’s edge, and the international sculpture festival “Mramor i zvuci” (Marble and Sounds) that has dotted the park with stone works since 1966. An easy day between Topola’s Oplenac and the Morava valley, it is the region’s family stop — water, park, cave, done unhurried.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

The mineral springs of Bukovička Banja were formalized in the 1860s (prince Miloš’s era); the town grew as the district centre after 1859 (named for the Aranđel monastery tradition of the region). The Risovača cave yielded Palaeolithic tools and cave-bear bones — the region’s deepest prehistory. The sculpture festival (1966, “Mramor i zvuci”) made the town’s park an open-air museum of world sculpture — the works stay, the stone multiplies yearly.
