ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

The Bjelašnica ski resort at Babin Do is the principal winter sports area on the mountain and the direct heir of its Olympic life. In February 1984 the men’s alpine skiing events of the XIV Winter Olympic Games were held on these slopes — the women’s events took place on the neighbouring mountain of Jahorina — and the courses prepared for the Games became the foundation of the modern resort. Today Babin Do is a working ski area of lifts, groomed pistes and mountain huts on the northern flanks, a short drive up from Sarajevo, with cold, deep snow and a high-alpine character. The coordinate given here marks the Babin Do visitor area rather than every lift or piste on the mountain. Winter skiing depends on open pistes and current resort conditions, which should be checked with the operator before a dedicated trip; in summer the lifts may run for ridgeline views, but summer operation is schedule-dependent and must be confirmed with the operator.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Bjelašnica’s life as a sport mountain was fixed by the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, when its slopes were prepared as the men’s alpine skiing venue. After the Games the area continued as a ski resort, and in the decades since the lifts and facilities at Babin Do have been progressively modernised. The Olympic heritage remains legible across the slopes, and the resort is one of the principal winter sports areas of Bosnia & Herzegovina, close to the capital.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The Olympic slopes — the men’s alpine skiing courses of the 1984 Winter Olympics, now the core of the modern ski area.

02

The lifts and groomed pistes — the working infrastructure of the Babin Do resort, open according to snow and resort conditions.

03

The mountain huts — the traditional way-stations of the ski area, gathering points on the northern flanks.

04

The ridgeline views — the high open views from the upper slopes across the Dinaric ranges toward Sarajevo and beyond.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Babin Do is the Olympic heart of Bjelašnica and the reason the mountain is a winter destination as well as a summer one. For a visitor it is the most accessible face of the mountain — the place to ski in winter or to ride the lifts in summer, when they run — and the clearest connection to the 1984 Games.
