ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Vrelo Krušnice is the spring where the Krušnica, a short tributary of the Una, rises out of the limestone a few kilometres from Bosanska Krupa. The water emerges clear and strong from the karst, gathering quickly into the stream that runs down to join the Una, and the spring sits in a quiet natural setting of rock, woodland and water. It is a short excursion from the town — reached by road rather than on foot — and a contrast to the riverside bustle of the islands and bridges: a place to see the Una system at its source, where the water begins before it reaches the town.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Vrelo Krušnice is a karst resurgence, a spring where water that has travelled through the limestone of the Krajina emerges at the surface to form the Krušnica river. The spring is a natural feature of the Una catchment, feeding one of the tributaries that join the main river downstream of Bosanska Krupa, and it has long been known locally as a beauty spot and a source of clear water. The site is unprotected by formal visitor facilities and is visited as a natural feature rather than a managed one.

WHAT TO SEE

What to see here

01

The spring itself — the point where the Krušnica rises clear and strong from the limestone, the sight that gives the place its name.

02

The young river — the short, clear stream that forms immediately below the spring and runs down toward the Una.

03

The natural setting — the rock, woodland and quiet of the karst landscape around the spring.

04

The contrast with the town river — the source of a tributary seen against the wider Una at Bosanska Krupa.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Vrelo Krušnice is the natural counterpart to the town’s riverside — the place where one of the Una’s tributaries begins, seen in a quiet karst setting. For a visitor with a car it is a rewarding short excursion that shows the water system behind the river that defines Bosanska Krupa.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Before you go

Access
Vrelo Krušnice is a few kilometres from Bosanska Krupa and is reached by road, not on foot from the centre; it is not part of the central walking loop. A car or arranged transport is needed.
Visiting
The spring is a natural site without formal visitor facilities; the terrain at the water’s edge is uneven, so take care and wear shoes with grip. Allow a short, focused stop.
Best Time
Spring to early autumn for the clearest water and the easiest access; the terrain can be wet and slippery after rain.
Context
Pair Vrelo Krušnice with Bosanska Otoka as a half-day excursion by car from Bosanska Krupa, leaving the walking loop of the centre for the other half of the day.
