ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

The Skyway is not transport, it is theatre: each cabin rotates a full turn during the climb, so every passenger gets the front-row view of the Brenva face, the peaks over four thousand metres and the deep-blue crevassed ice of the Géant glacier. The mid-station Pavillon du Mont Fréty (2,173 m) holds the Saussurea alpine botanical garden — the highest in Europe, open mid-June to late September — and the Hangar 2,173 museum of cable-car engineering. From the glass terraces of Punta Helbronner (3,466 m) the whole massif spreads: Mont Blanc de Courmayeur, the Grandes Jorasses, the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa on clear days.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

What you’ll experience

You ride up in the morning (first cabins from about 8:00; book the first wave for calm and light), walk the terrace circuit at Helbronner, and — for the full experience — continue in the old Panoramic Mont-Blanc gondola that dangles across the Géant glacier to the Aiguille du Midi in France (extra ticket), returning by bus through the tunnel. The Skyway round trip is about €65 (children and family passes cheaper); the crossing to Chamonix and back pushes past €100.
