ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The church is unlike anything else in Serbia: a three-nave basilica of white and rose marble, with Romanesque portals and Gothic windows — the Kotor-school builders’ work — standing in a valley of the Prokletije foothills. Inside, the frescoes (1335–1350) run over a thousand scenes; the royal tomb of Stefan Dečanski sits in the naos, and the reliquary keeps the king’s remains.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
Founded 1327 by king Stefan Dečanski (the charter carved above the west portal), completed c. 1335 under king Dušan, painted through 1350. The tomb became the dynasty’s holy place; the monastery survived the Ottoman era intact — the brotherhood’s continuity is among the longest in Serbia. UNESCO inscribed it in 2006 as part of “Medieval Monuments in Kosovo” (also on the List of World Heritage in Danger).
