ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Divčibare is Belgrade’s mountain lung: a broad plateau at 1,000 metres on Mount Maljen, laid with meadows and spruce, where the air-spa tradition runs back a century. The walks are gentle (the plateau is the trail), the views run to the Pannonian plain on clear days, and the villages of the Kađenica and the Crna Reka waterfalls make the day’s outings. Smaller and quieter than Zlatibor, it is the west’s second mountain resort — and its most relaxed.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

The plateau’s name (from “divlja kobila” — the wild mare, in the local legend) entered history as a herder’s summer pasture; the air-spa era began between the wars, when Belgrade doctors prescribed the Maljen air, and the hotels grew after WWII. The 21st century brought the apartment wave — but the plateau’s walks and the spruce stands keep the pace.
