ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Valjevo keeps one of Serbia’s rare surviving Ottoman quarters: Tešnjar, the cobbled street of craftsmen’s houses climbing the hill above the Kolubara — the town’s living postcard. Around it, a real West-Serbian town: the Muselim’s konak (the pasha’s court), the churches of the 19th century, the Petnica valley where Serbia’s famous science school teaches its teenagers, and the cave and spas of the surrounding hills. Valjevo is an easy day — the town by lunch, the valley by dinner.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Valjevo grew as the Ottoman frontier town (the “Banja of the pashas”) with its crafts quarter at Tešnjar; the Muselim’s konak kept the pasha’s court until 1804 — when the First Uprising’s execution of the knezes here (the “seča knezova”, the trigger of the uprising) began Serbia’s modern story. The 19th century made it the West’s trading town; the 20th added industry and, in 1982, the Petnica Science Centre — the experimental school that became a national institution. The uprising’s memory, the Ottoman quarter and the science valley make Valjevo unusually layered for its size.
