ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Felix Romuliana is the tetrarchy’s greatest surviving monument: a fortified palace (20-tower ramparts) that Galerius built as retirement residence and dynastic temple — the gates, the temple platforms, the fine mosaics and the villas stand in a compound whose plan the visitor reads in one sweep. The hills above hold the two tumuli — the emperor’s and his mother’s burial mounds — the pair that make the site’s meaning complete: the palace of a deified emperor.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Galerius (Caesar 293, Augustus 305, died 311) named the palace for his mother Romula — “Felix Romuliana”, the happy place of Romula. The compound was built in two great campaigns (298–304, 306–311); after the emperor’s death and deification the tumuli held the burning rituals. The site declined into the medieval “Gradac”; its identification (1980s excavations, the inscription finds) and the UNESCO inscription (2007) returned it to Europe’s map.
