The story behind it

Klagenfurt grew rich on trade between Vienna and Venice, and Italian master builders shaped the Renaissance cityscape. The city has won the Europa Nostra heritage prize three times for the preservation of its old town.

The Lindwurm dragon fountain on Neuer Platz in Klagenfurt
Landmark

Lindwurm Fountain

The winged dragon on Neuer Platz is the symbol of Klagenfurt. Carved from a single six-ton block of chlorite schist in 1593, the Lindwurm commemorates the legend of a dragon that terrorised the marshes where the city was founded — builders modelled its head on a woolly rhinoceros skull found nearby, now displayed in the Landesmuseum.

Lake & Lido

Strandbad Klagenfurt

At the end of the Lendkanal, the eastern bay opens into Strandbad Klagenfurt, one of Europe’s largest lakeside lidos: a wide sandy beach, a 113-metre water slide and shallow, swimmable turquoise water with views across to the Pyramidenkogel. The 1930s modernist entrance building is a listed landmark of the Wörthersee architecture boom.

Family Attraction

Minimundus

Beside Europapark on the way to the lake, Minimundus shows more than 160 models of the world’s most famous buildings at 1:25 scale — the Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal, St Peter’s Basilica — spread across 26,000 m² of parkland with working miniature trains and cable cars. It has been run by the Carinthian children’s charity Rettet das Kind since 1958.

Viewpoint

Pyramidenkogel Tower

South of the lake, the Pyramidenkogel rises to 851 m, crowned by a 100-metre wooden-steel observation tower shaped like a double helix — the tallest wooden observation tower in the world. A spiral walkway climbs past three viewing platforms to a panorama that runs from the Karawanks on the Slovenian border to the Hohe Tauern, and Europe’s tallest building slide carries you back down in 30 seconds.

Village & Church

Maria Wörth Peninsula

The small peninsula on the southern shore was an island until 1770 and is the cradle of Christianity in Carinthia: a church stood here by 875, holding the relics of Saints Primus and Felician brought from Rome. The pilgrimage church and the little Winterkirche sit above the water among mature trees, and the village promenade below is the quietest on the lake.

Lakeside Village

Pörtschach Promenade

On the north shore, Pörtschach is the Wörthersee of the travel posters: a two-kilometre flower promenade past white villa architecture, the Werzer bathing house on stilts and the wooded Landspitz peninsula, whose lawn slopes into the water with a view across to Maria Wörth. Johannes Brahms composed his Violin Concerto here during summers in the 1870s.
