ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Below the fortress, in the bazaar quarter’s old quarter, the Ethnographic museum occupies the Toptani family’s 19th-century house — a rich merchant home of stone rooms, wooden galleries and a small garden, furnished as it lived: the loom with its half-woven cloth, the grain mill, the forge, the wedding costumes of the mountain wardrobe, the guest-room’s musendra with its copper. It is the most complete picture of Ottoman-era Albanian domestic life in the country, and the friendly docents demonstrate the loom and the mill for visitors.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The house belonged to the Toptani family, bazaar merchants of the 19th century; the Communist state acquired it in the 1970s and opened the ethnographic museum in 1976 as part of the “hero city” heritage ensemble. Its collections — textiles, costumes, farm tools, craft workshops — were assembled from the Kruja region’s villages; the house itself, with its stone walls and carved wood, is the museum’s largest exhibit.
