ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Kruja’s bazaar is the living Ottoman market street of Albania — a cobbled lane of wooden shops with tiled roofs climbing toward the castle gate, trading on the same stones since the 16th century. The goldsmiths still work silver at their benches (Kruja’s filigree is a regional trademark), the felt-makers sell qylafe hats, the antique stalls hold old rifles, costumes and copper — some genuinely 19th-century. Tea houses and terrace cafés break the browsing; the whole lane smells of leather, coffee and wood shavings.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The bazaar grew with the Ottoman craft town from the 16th century — Kruja’s tanners, silversmiths and felt-makers served the whole mountain region; the lane’s wooden shops were rebuilt after fires in the 19th century in their present form. Declared a protected monument under the Communist state, it survived as a craft street where most Albanian bazaars modernised away; the goldsmith tradition continues in the same benches today.
