ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The bridge over the Ibar is Mitrovica’s lived symbol — the two banks meet here, the cafés watch from both sides, and crossing it is the town’s essential (and sobering) experience. Above the town, the Trepča miner’s monument (the raised arm on the ridge) keeps the industry’s memory — the mines that fed medieval kings and 20th-century Yugoslavia.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The bridge joined the town through the Ottoman and Yugoslav eras; 1999 divided it — the bridge became the line, today passable on foot. Trepča (the mines, first recorded 14th century, the combine through 1980s) made and unmade the town’s fortune; the miner’s monument (Yugoslav modernism, on the Krstov ridge) is the region’s strongest modernist memorial.
