ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Kosovska Mitrovica is the Ibar’s town: the river divides it, the bridge is its symbol and the Zvečan fortress watches from the hill where the Romans and the Serbs kept the valley before. The town grew on the Trepča mines — the lead-zinc giant whose story (from the medieval silver to the industrial giant and its end) is the region’s modern history in one industry. It is the north’s practical town: real, unpolished, and its setting between the fortress hill and the Kopaonik’s last ridges is dramatic.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

Zvečan (the fortress above the Ibar) guarded the valley from the Roman era through the Nemanjići; the medieval mines of Trepča (the first records from the 14th century) made the region one of Europe’s silver sources under king Milutin. The town itself grew with the railway (1874) and the Trepča combine (20th century, the largest employer of the region); the 1999 war and the Ibar bridge made the town the symbol of the region’s division — the north bank Serbian, the south Albanian — the reality every visitor feels crossing the bridge.
