ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Zvečan hangs on the hill above the Ibar’s left bank: the walls run the ridge, the towers keep the valley in one sweep, and the climb (20 minutes) is the region’s shortest path to a great panorama — the town, the bridge, the Trepča ridge and the Kopaonik’s last folds beyond.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

The fortress’s roots are Roman (the valley’s road guard); the Serbian medieval era rebuilt it (the Nemanjići kept the mines’ road), and the Ottoman era held it to the 18th century. Below it, the medieval joust of 1389-era legends and the modern town both played out on the same crossing.
