ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The pivnice are whole villages of cellars: streets of wooden and stone wine-houses built apart from the villages, where each Krajina family kept its vintage. Rajac’s street is the best preserved (the protective heritage listing), and the vineyards around it — with Rogljevo’s cellars over the hill — are the region’s slow-day drive.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The cellar-villages grew in the 18th–19th centuries (the Habsburg-Ottoman border trade’s wine demand); the families built away from home for the vintage’s work and the cellars’ constant temperature. The tradition declined through the 20th century — the heritage listing (Rajac 1980s) and the new small-winemaker wave returned the life.
