ABOUT THE DESTINATION

Negotin is the capital of the Krajina — Serbia’s oldest wine country between the Danube and the Bulgarian border, where the wooden cellar-villages (the pivnice) of Rajac sit among the vineyards and the region’s reds and whites have been poured since Roman times. The town keeps the Krajina Museum and the memory of Stevan Mokranjac (the composer, born in nearby Mokranje); the vineyard drives between Rajac, Rogljevo and Štubik are the east’s most beautiful slow day.

HISTORY & CULTURE

The Story Behind the Place

The Krajina’s vines are ancient — the Roman Danube frontier drank here, and the medieval records list the vineyards of the Negotin hills. The pivnice cellar-villages (18th–19th centuries) are the tradition’s monument: whole streets of wooden and stone cellars built away from the villages, where each family kept its wine — Rajac’s street is the best preserved. The town grew as the Krajina’s market centre; Stevan Mokranjac (1856, Mokranje), Serbia’s greatest composer, was born in the region — his choral legacy is the town’s pride.
