ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Cetina gorge is the great natural sight of Omiš — a steep limestone canyon that runs inland from the town, with the Cetina river running through it and the cliffs rising on either side. It is the centre for river adventure in Central Dalmatia: rafting trips down the rapids, canyoning through the side gorges, and zip-lines that cross the canyon above the river. The gorge is also a place to swim, with the river beaches and the Gubavica waterfall upstream.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Cetina gorge was the pirates’ refuge — a defensible canyon that could be closed with a chain across the river, which is why the Omiš pirates held out against Venice for so long. In modern times the gorge became the adventure centre of Central Dalmatia, with rafting, canyoning and zip-line operators based in Omiš and along the river. The river itself rises in the karst interior and runs clear and cool through the canyon to the sea, with the Gubavica waterfall and the swimming pools along its course.
