ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Jerma is the region’s wildest water: a river that cuts through the limestone in looping gorges — the canyon’s rock walls and the road’s tunnels make the drive itself the sight. At the canyon’s heart sits Poganovo (14th century), the monastery of St John the Theologian whose church clings to the rock — among Serbia’s most beautifully sited monasteries.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Jerma’s canyon shaped the region’s roads and faiths: the medieval hermits held the gorge; Poganovo was founded in the 14th century (the Dečanski-era tradition) and its church keeps frescoes of the 15th–16th centuries. The modern road (with the canyon’s tunnels) made the gorge accessible.
