ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Rovinj’s old town is the picture of Istria — a tumble of pastel houses crowded onto a former island, their lanes rising steeply from the harbours on either side up to the hilltop church of St Euphemia. Until 1763 it was a true island, and the cramped, organic street plan still shows it: narrow cobbled lanes, sudden stairways, washing strung overhead and artists’ studios in the old fishermen’s houses. The car-free core is the whole reason the town is photographed as much as it is.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Rovinj was an island fishing settlement under Venetian rule from the 13th century, growing so crowded that it filled the islet completely. In 1763 the narrow channel was filled in to join it to the mainland, but the street plan of the old island survives unchanged. The town’s Italian name, Rovigno, reflects its bilingual heritage — it was part of Italy until 1947 — and the old town still has a strong Italian character in its architecture, food and language.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

The old town is Rovinj — there is no separate sight to visit, the town itself is the sight, and wandering its lanes at golden hour is the experience most visitors remember. For a traveller it is the most photogenic old town on the Istrian coast.
