ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Brezovica was built to host an Olympics that went to Sarajevo, and the mountain is better for it: the resort’s expansion froze mid-plan, leaving 25 kilometres of north-face runs and a vast off-piste bowl largely to the free-riders. The snow is the deepest and most reliable in the Balkans — the Šar’s north face holds powder from December into May at the top station, and the tree runs through spruce are the region’s most photographed descent. The village below is a time capsule of 1980s mountain architecture with a handful of new villas, and the lift queue, even in February, rarely forms.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The first lifts rose in 1953; the resort was expanded through the 1960s and 1970s as Yugoslavia’s second ski centre, and was the named candidate mountain for the 1984 Winter Olympics — a bid Sarajevo won, redirecting the investment. Brezovica’s planned second phase never came; the resort ran through the Yugoslav years and the 1990s on its original infrastructure, and the north face’s off-piste became a cult destination for free-riders from across Europe who wanted Olympic-grade terrain without Olympic crowds.
