ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION

Ljuboten is the Šar’s picture-postcard summit — a perfect rocky pyramid at 2,498 m, climbed from the village of Novo Selo through forests and the high pasture belt. The pastures themselves hold the mountain’s strangest treasure: a herd of wild horses, some hundred animals descended from work horses set loose when tractors replaced them in the 1960s, grazing between the shepherd huts and the ridge. The climb is the best one-day hike of the massif — start in forest, cross the pasture sea, finish on bare rock with Macedonia’s Scharra lakes below.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND

The story behind it

Ljuboten’s name comes from the medieval village at its foot; the peak marked the border of the Serbian medieval state’s Šar estates, and the shepherd paths over the massif are centuries old. The wild horses descend from the work animals of the collective-farm era — released or escaped in the 1960s, they have bred free on the pastures ever since, unowned and uncounted, and have become the mountain’s living emblem, photographed by every Šar hiker lucky enough to meet the herd.
