ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Titov vrh is the Šar’s throne: a sharp marble pyramid at the crest of the massif, reached in a long day from Popova šapka or from the Štrpce side through the cirque of the Livadić lakes. The ruined mountain hut at its shoulder — built 1932, burned and rebuilt twice, ruined again in the 1990s — is the mountain’s saddest landmark; the summit itself is a straightforward but serious climb over bare rock where weather turns in minutes. From the top the whole southern Balkans unrolls: Korab and the Albanian Alps west, the Justinian wall east, the Metohija plain and Prizren immediately below.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The peak was named for Josip Broz Tito in the Yugoslav era, replacing the older Turkish-derived name; the mountain hut at its shoulder was built in 1932 by the Štrpce mountaineers as the first shelter above the pastures, burned in the Second World War and rebuilt in 1961, then abandoned during the 1990s wars and left a ruin — today it is both a landmark and a warning. The old shepherd paths over the summit connected the Metohija and Macedonian sides of the massif for centuries of transhumance.
