ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
Žiča is where the Serbian church was born and its kings crowned: built 1206–17 by Stefan the First-Crowned and his brother Sava, first seat of the autocephalous archbishopric from 1219. Its red-brick walls on the hill — the “crvena crkva” — held the coronation rite that no other church could perform; the seven medieval kings anointed here give the monastery its seven-doored legend. The interior keeps 13th-century painting beneath later layers; the yard’s peace is total.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
After the crusader sack of Constantinople (1204), Stefan took a royal crown from Rome and was crowned at Žiča (1217); two years later Sava obtained autocephaly from Nicaea and made Žiča the archbishopric’s first seat. The monastery’s privilege — crowning the kings — made it the kingdom’s spiritual hinge. Destroyed mid-13th century (Tatar raids) and rebuilt by kings Stephen and Uroš, it declined under the Ottomans; the 20th century restored it as a living women’s monastery.

GOOD TO KNOW
Facts & Curiosities
The coronation rite was reserved to Žiča — “no king but on the red hill”, as the medieval formula ran.
The legend of the seven doors: one door built for each king crowned here — the number varies, the symbolism holds.
Žiča was the first seat of the autocephalous Serbian archbishopric (1219) before the see moved to Peć.
The monastery is a living women’s community — the nuns keep the liturgy and the famous Žiča rose-planting tradition.
