ABOUT THIS ATTRACTION
The Kamerlengo fortress stands at the harbour end of the Trogir island, a 15th-century Venetian fortress built to guard the channel and the town. Its walls and tower are now a viewpoint over the old town, the channel and the Čiovo side, and the fortress is used as a summer venue. It is the military counterpoint to the cathedral’s art, and the place to ascend for the view of the whole island from the water side.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
The story behind it
The Kamerlengo was built by the Venetians in the 15th century, after Trogir came under Venetian rule, as part of the town’s defences against the water and the Ottomans. It takes its name from the camerlengo, the Venetian treasury official who administered the town. The fortress was partly dismantled in the 19th century and restored in the 20th, and it now serves as a viewpoint and a summer concert venue.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why it matters
The Kamerlengo is the viewpoint and the military half of Trogir — the place to see the island from the water side and to balance the cathedral visit with an ascent. For a visitor it is the afternoon stop after the cathedral.
